EMDR: A Soft Approach to Trauma and Anxiety

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. Rather than focusing only on talking about what happened, EMDR supports your brain’s natural ability to process and integrate difficult memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming. EMDR can be used for more than trauma memories, EMDR is used to help process anxiety including anticipatory anxiety, depression, grief, chronic pain, medical issues or other adverse life experiences.

During EMDR, you’ll work with your therapist to safely access and reprocess memories using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping). Over time, the emotional intensity of the memory lessens, and you can experience more calm, clarity, and self-compassion.

As an evidence-based treatment, EMDR is recognized as effective for treating trauma by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the Department of Defense.
